Worthy Down

Worthy Down's association with the Military began in 1918 when the Wireless and Observers School was established. Worthy Down was known primarily as a flying station and became host to most senior officers and airmen in the Royal Air Force at some stage in their career. In 1942 it was decided to stop using the airfield, infamous for its uphill landing, which by then had become unsuitable for modern aircraft. Thereafter Worthy Down was gradually reduced to a care and maintenance station until 1952 when it passed to the Royal Navy. It transferred to the Army in 1960 when the Royal Army Pay Corps (now part of The Adjutant General's Corps) moved in.

Today Worthy Down is home to The Defence School of Personnel Administration (Army). DSPA is also responsible for the Army School of Education (ASE). Worthy Down also houses the Headquarters of DFSS and Army Phase 2 & 3 Chef Training.

Worthy Down is located approximately 5 miles from the historic city of Winchester which has excellent road and rail links being 1 hour by rail to London Waterloo. Southampton, Basingstoke and Portsmouth are all within easy travelling distance, each has excellent shopping facilities.

Worthy Down camp is easily accessible to the M3, M4 and is located adjacent to the A34.

The following facilities are available within camp: the community centre which hosts several clubs, a playgroup and crèche, a gymnasium complex which boasts excellent facilities, shops and hairdresser/barber.
